Think that the only place to view John Lennon’s artwork is at Yoko Ono’s apartment in the Dakota, or at the John Lennon Museum in Tokyo, Japan? Think again. How about in Los Angeles, CA at Blooming Art Gallery. Nestled in the Little Tokyo community at the Japanese Village, Blooming Art is pure eye candy for any Lennon fan, collector, or just a lover of the avanta garde. Nikki Ikeda boasts a large inventory of Lennon art. “This is a drawing John made of Yoko and gave it to her as a wedding present.” Ikeda explains showing a rather provocative rendering of Ono. Lennon’s art is placed all around the tiny gallery and it’s hard to decide where to begin. In the corner of the shop there is a space devoted to Lennon and The Beatles. There are Beatles books, video tapes and other assorted memorabilia. Ikeda brings out a post card of one of Lennon’s drawings of Ono and Lennon in an “Apple Pie Bed.” The symbolism is not missed. There are several post cards of Lennon as subject and are reasonably priced at around $3.00. There is also a bumper sticker depicting the Lennons’ famous rendition of THE WAR IS OVER. If you press Ikeda, she’ll tell you how she got in touch with Ono in the 80’s and has continued their arrangement up to the present. Ikeda will show you her Japanese edition of a Lennon book of art with his drawings and their titles with the Japanese interpretation of them. Ikeda will also offer up that she goes to Japan every few months to visit and always brings Lennon treasures back from the John Lennon Museum in Tokyo, Japan. Because the art work is hung high up on the walls of her tiny shop, it is important to watch your step otherwise you might trip and fall onto the other art that is lower to the floor. If you mention Andy Warhol, her faces lights up and she points to the Warhol’s that she has collected such as “The Shoe.” Ikeda also has many fine examples of Japanese art including masks, bonzis and other traditional items. Blooming Art can be googled and can also be found at 129 Japanese Village Plaza in downtown Los Angeles. Ikeda can be contacted at 213-628-8811.
