On this day in 1971 Jim Morrison was found dead in the bathtub of his apartment located at 17-19 Rue Beautraillis, Paris. No autopsy was conducted as the coroner reported “no signs of foul play”, however this has led to decades of speculation as to why the 27 year old Doors singer died so suddenly. It was known that Morrison was having problems with his health after years of drug and alcohol abuse including heart problems. Morrison’s long term girlfriend, Pamela Courson stated that “(Jim) felt unwell and had left the bedroom in the middle of the night to take a bath and relax”, but in later accounts Courson, now deceased was criticised for possibly lying to the Police about Jim’s drug use leading to increased speculation that she also lied about how events unfolded that night. In 2007, a friend of Jim’s called Sam Bernett wrote a book entitled “The End – Jim Morrison” in which he claimed Morrison actually died in a Paris night club called “The Rock n Roll Circus” of a massive heroin overdose whilst trying to obtain drugs for Courson. The death was allegedly covered up to protect the night club and a well known French dealer called Jean de Breteuil, who died of an overdose soon afterwards in Morocco. According to Bernett, singer Marianne Faithfull was in the club at the time and “was sworn to secrecy”. She refused to be interviewed by the press at the time the allegations were made. Morrison, having been found slumped dead in a toilet cubicle in the club was then supposedly moved to his bathtub. The French authorities took Bernett’s story so seriously that the case was reopened, but I can find no conclusion. On another note, in 2010 Jim Morrison was cleared by the State of Florida for indecency crimes allegedly committed during a concert famously re-inacted in the Oliver Stone film “The Doors” staring Val Kilmer. The Florida Governor was shocked by how “sneaky and underhand” the courts had been in their dealings with Morrison. Morrison’s tombstone can be found in the Pere Lachaise graveyard in Paris. It is a small, squat and rather drab looking grave tucked behind larger gravestones and it really doesn’t feel like the final resting place of one of rock’s wildest and most talented lead singers. RIP Jim.
