Amid the noise of bad press, a court proceeding and protesters the Asian elephants at the LA Zoo have an unlikely champion…former Guns N’ roses axman Slash. According to Slash he’s been coming to the LA Zoo since he was around 5-years-old and would come at least once a week and sometimes two. Now an adult, he still likes to visit the LA Zoo and has turned his passion for animals into a practical vocation as a trustee for the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA). Although it’s hard to believe that this rocker has a soft spot for animals, LA Zoo PR Rep Jason Jacobs assured NFTF that Slash is indeed a trustee at the LA Zoo and has made several promo videos for the zoo.
Slash states that as a musician he tours the world and while touring he visits zoos in other countries and the LA Zoo is his favorite still and that it’s the best he has seen on his travels. Who knew?
“The LA Zoo has changed” informs Slash as you look at him still in awe at the fact that he is a trustee at the LA Zoo. He wants to encourage everyone to come to the LA Zoo and see for themselves how large and innovative the new Asian elephant habitat is. This coming weekend would be a good time to explore the elephant habitat as there is an event planned for August 3, 4, 5 which is labeled Elephant Appreciation Days. The event is an open house where visitors to the $42million exhibit may look around the new barn that houses Billy, Jewel and Tina.
The floor of the new barn is heated to accommodate the two ageing elephant cows and is imposing in it’s size as well as Asian themed architecture, but according to LA Zoo educator Larry Guarnett during the night the elephants have been slipping out into the outside enclosure to enjoy the coolness of the nights. NFTF walked around the entire perimeter of the elephant habitat and as Slash states “It’s amazing and massive.” Visit the LA Zoo’s web site at http://www.lazoo.org and go to the elephant selection and hear Slash for yourselves, or call at 1-323-644-4700 for more information about this do not miss coming event.
When speaking with Jacobs about Slash’s association with the zoo, he was quick to remind NFTF that veteran actress Betty White is still active in GLAZA as the Board President and that the LA Zoo is American Zoo Association (AZA) accredited. NFTF is no expert, but is betting that this accreditation is not as easy to come by as a internet minister certification is.
For those that think that they might get a glimpse of Slash at this open house for the elephant habitat think again as Slash is still on tour in Canada and from there is planning another tour in Europe…are there any zoos left in world that he hasn’t seen?
