Watching the KONGOS ‘ set last night made NFTF feel as if the Maven was watching history being made for this progressive alternate band. The KONGOS ripped up the stage with a voraciousness that reminded one of King Kong defending his territory…masters of their genre.
This band exuded a tenacity that the Maven has not seen since the likes of an early Patti Smith and her breakthrough LP “Easter”. Every riff was an homage to their rock roots and the forging of a new type of world beat that will rock you up!
The band consists of 4 brothers that have been living in South Africa with their parents, their dad is also an accomplished musician and songwriter. Their mother Shelly is a wonderfully charming woman who told NFTF that the band has been at it for 16 years and that she is ready to #ridethewave.
During the set the lead singer/barefooted bass player informed KONGOS sold out show attendees that the last time they had played the Troubadour there were only a few attendees and he thought that perhaps they belonged to another band sharing the bill. WOW, who would have guessed that!
The KONGOS inserted a few Beatles’ songs that made NFTF’s ears perk up and take notice. NFTF is not a Beatles purist, but if you are going to play a Beatle tune you had better be doing it justice and that is just what they did. “Come Together” sets a new record for interpreting a Beatles’ song in a way that is an homage to the past, but is also a groundbreaking, edgy song with an eye on today’s styles.
Keep an eye on this band because they are going places…#ridethewave!
